- Ammonium Nitrate to Control Suckers
We all know the burden of trying to control suckers in our Hazelnut orchards, particularly those of us growing Whiteheart, a prolific sucker producer. At the recent HGANZ winter field days, Associate Professor Clive Kaiser from Lincoln University made us aware of an alternative to agrochemical, or mechanical control of suckers. He had just returned from overseas and observed the use of ammonium nitrate fertiliser to control young sucker growth. This seems appealing to me to be controlling suckers with a fertiliser compared to having to use an agrochemical. Along with this newsletter we are attaching a paper describing this method and results as applied in Hazelnuts in Turkey. This paper is for educational purposes only, it should not be sold or reproduced, or further distributed. I am not aware of any work having been done in NZ to prove or disprove this method in NZ. So the HGANZ and its committee members take no responsibility for the success or otherwise of you trialling this method for yourselves. You do so at your own risk. If you do try it over the coming season it would be great if you can keep some records and or photographs which we could share with other growers at the end of this season.
